Artisans of the

World

With the hands, man creates wonder and beauty.
Knowledge is becoming more and more digital, but analog and practical knowledge is what fascinates me the most.
Manual skill brings with it tradition, and the sedimentation of time, which in this historic period is a luxury we do not want to afford.
Development is wiping out traditional knowledge, too expensive to be commercially attractive, and too slow for the flooding torrent of modernity.
Much of what we see or make today is fragile or temporary content; it lasts the moment of a click to then fall into oblivion at the bottom of the digital sea.
Traditions and craftsmanship perhaps will be lost or perhaps will return; this portfolio is meant to enhance the beauty of this way of knowing the world.

These photographs are the story of my seven-month journey through India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, meeting numerous artisans who shared their stories with me.
Their lives are written on their hands and I stood in silence watching them work for hours.

The photos are my gift to those who opened the doors of their homes, their workshops and gave me precious time.
